Obayashi Establishes Its First Overseas Supply Chain for CleanCrete™ in Indonesia and Completes Pilot Application

Technologies

OBAYASHI CORPORATION (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Toshimi Sato; hereinafter referred to as "the Company") has established a local supply chain in Indonesia for CleanCrete (*1), a low-carbon concrete developed by the Company, and successfully completed a pilot application at a construction site. This marks the first overseas deployment of CleanCrete.

Background

In recent years, the construction industry has been required to reduce CO2 emissions across the entire project lifecycle, including the construction phase, to achieve carbon neutrality. As a major construction material, concrete has become a key focus for decarbonization efforts.

The Company has been promoting the use of CleanCrete in Japan and exploring opportunities for its application in overseas markets.

However, overseas deployment presents challenges, as material performance, quality standards, and climatic conditions differ from those in Japan. As a result, mix designs and quality control methods established in Japan cannot be directly applied in other countries.

In Indonesia, the Company tailored CleanCrete to locally available materials, and local production and construction conditions, while ensuring strength performance, workability, and cost efficiency together with CO2 reduction.

Overview of This Initiative

Establishment of a Local Production System for CleanCrete

In collaboration with Pionirbeton Industri (PBI), a major ready-mixed concrete supplier in Indonesia, the Company conducted a series of tests to support the local production and application of CleanCrete. Through these efforts, the Company established a mix design using locally sourced materials that is suited to local production and construction conditions while maintaining a cement content of less than 30%, consistent with its mix design in Japan. This enabled local production of CleanCrete, which reduces CO2 emissions by more than 60% compared with conventional concrete.

Implementation of a Pilot Application

CleanCrete was applied to the foundations of a temporary building in a data center construction project as a pilot application. CleanCrete produced at PBI's ready-mixed concrete plant was transported to the site and placed using a concrete pump truck. As a result, there were no issues with workability, no cracks or other defects were observed on the finished surface, confirming that the concrete could be placed with satisfactory quality.

Future Outlook

Going forward, the Company will leverage the knowledge gained through this initiative to further optimize mix designs and construction conditions tailored to local conditions. The Company aims to expand the application of CleanCrete in construction projects across Indonesia, including the data center construction project where the pilot application was carried out.

The Company will continue to contribute to the realization of carbon neutrality by establishing CleanCrete supply chains tailored to the conditions of each country and region to help meet decarbonization needs during the construction phase of projects overseas.

  • *1 CleanCrete
CleanCrete is a low-carbon concrete developed by the Company that significantly reduces CO2 emissions by replacing most of the cement with industrial by-products such as ground granulated blast-furnace slag. As of the end of FY2025, CleanCrete had been used in approximately 479,000 m3 of concrete in Japan.
